Resources on the Teaching Profession
A new AFT evidence-to-action brief highlights a simple truth: Students learn more when lessons connect to their lives, interests and identities. Research shows that social, emotional and academic learning are deeply linked—and when students feel engaged and supported, achievement, persistence and graduation rates improve. The takeaway: Creating meaningful, inclusive and engaging classrooms isn’t something extra—it’s essential for student success.
Educators face stress every day from the strain of managing the trauma and anxiety that are showing up in student behavior, the nonstop paperwork and administrative tasks, and culture wars that make it difficult for educators to teach what students need to know. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By prioritizing educators’ well-being, schools can create an environment that fosters growth, resilience and, ultimately, better education outcomes.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 300,000 teachers were leaving the profession each year, and schools were also facing persistent shortages among the school support staff who play such a vital role in every child’s school day. The pandemic only made things worse. The pandemic, combined with political culture wars, made the last two years the toughest in modern times for educators.
The AFT conducted a members survey as well as hosted focus groups where our members shared their on-the-ground experiences. Armed with that data, along with expert academic research, our national Teacher and School Staff Shortage Task Force—made up of 25 leaders from state and local affiliates across the country—released a report, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?. This report offers practical, research-proven solutions to reverse the shortages and revitalize the education profession.
