Final TEACH headliner calls for ‘education of the heart’
For the closing general session of AFT TEACH, attendees heard from AFT Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus and the globally recognized filmmaker, human rights advocate and education activist Leslee Udwin. Udwin called on policymakers to direct education to the whole child and commit to repurposing education with social-emotional learning at its core.
Union leaders share strategies for thriving in red states
Union work can be challenging, particularly in red states. But that hasn’t stopped leaders like Ron Hobert, president of AFT Kansas, and Jason Roberts, of the Kansas University Nurses Association, from forging ahead. In their Sunday morning workshop at AFT TEACH, “Building Success: Strategies for Thriving Unions in Middle America,” the two veteran organizers shared hard-earned insights on recruitment, bargaining, legislative advocacy and leadership development.
Planning project-based learning with artificial intelligence
At AFT TEACH, educators learned to used artificial intelligence to facilitate project-based learning, but facilitators stressed that empathy, relationships and real‑time judgment remain irreplaceable. AI can act as a planning partner, but "in the end, gadgets break. Teachers always change the world.”
The power of belonging to create a safe classroom for immigrant students
On the last day of AFT TEACH, educators learn and share key ways to foster an environment of belonging for immigrant students and create a true sense of safety to allow for genuine learning and joy.
Supporting learning for all students through co-teaching
Co-teaching allows two or more certified educators to share responsibility for meeting the needs of a diverse group of learners, regardless of ability or background. On the final morning of AFT TEACH, the session “Better Together: Unlocking the Power of Co-Teaching” explored the benefits and challenges of co-teaching for students, educators and schools.
