AFT Affordability Campaign

Our fight for an affordable life

Working people are being crushed by inflation. The cost of housing, utilities, healthcare, child care, college, even the cost of keeping up with credit cards or medical bills—it’s all going up and making it harder for us to get by. That’s why we’re launching our multifront Fight for Affordability campaign, to help our members deal with the costs and debt hurting them. We’re providing resources, including an interactive debt navigator interactive tool, how-to videos and links to the resources you need, and ongoing live debt clinics with experts to answer your questions on medical debt. Click here to see all our resources and share them with your friends and family.

#PublicSchoolProud

Get ready, get set … Public Schools Week starts today

It’s a weeklong celebration, Feb. 23-27, honoring the achievements of public school educators, support staff and advocates. Led by the Learning First Alliance, a coalition of 11 national education groups representing more than 10 million educators and allies, Public Schools Week invites the school community to lift up our nation’s K-12 employees. Join us in celebrating one of America’s greatest innovations: our public schools.

We are America

Together, we are America

On Super Bowl Sunday, AFT president Randi Weingarten spent the morning handing out free books to families at P.S. 48 in the Bronx—stories in multiple languages, about heroes, refugees, athletes and pop stars—reflecting the full, vibrant diversity of our communities. That same spirit carried into the Super Bowl halftime show, a celebration of culture that underscored a simple truth: America’s strength is its diversity. At a time when civil rights and inclusive schools are under attack, educators are standing up—for opportunity, for decency and for every child. Because together, we are America.

Kamala Harris TONIGHT

TONIGHT: A conversation with Kamala Harris

Join AFT President Randi Weingarten tonight at 6 p.m. Eastern for an AFT Book Club conversation with former Vice President Kamala Harris about her memoir, 107 Days. Harris reflects on the period after President Joe Biden stepped aside, her emergence as the Democratic nominee for president, and the urgency and resolve needed during a defining moment in American history. She and Weingarten will discuss leadership under pressure, the role of schools and colleges in sustaining democracy, and what those 107 days reveal about public service and collective action. Join the conversation.

Together we can stop SAVE 2.0

Let’s stop the anti-voting SAVE Act

Every person in America deserves a voice in our democracy. But right now, President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress are trying to silence our voices with the SAVE America Act and the Make Elections Great Again Act—together known as SAVE 2.0. These bills are designed to silence peoples’ voices at the ballot box through excessive paperwork, prohibition, purges and punishments. Among other things, they would abolish safe, reliable vote-by-mail systems and impose stricter photo ID requirements that would leave eligible voters behind. We can’t let our vote be taken away. Tell your senators to vote no on SAVE 2.0.

March 4 Day of Action

Join us as we ‘march forth’ on March 4

Families are facing rising costs while public education, higher ed, healthcare and public services are being cut. School and college staff are being asked to do more with less. Meanwhile, immigration raids are causing terror in schools and on campuses—places that should be safe. But opportunity and affordability matter. We must keep up the pressure, showing the nation who we are and what we’re fighting for. Register for the March 4 nationwide day of action to protect our communities and fight for a better life.
