As higher education navigates the Trump administration, we’ve compiled resources to assist our members.
The growth of contingent and part-time workers in higher education has affected union governance. AFT locals are structured in many different ways: sometimes with all faculty in the same bargaining unit on the same contract, sometimes in the same local with separate contracts, and sometimes in separately organized “sister locals.” Whatever the structure, it is our duty as unionists to make sure the disparate treatment of contingent workers by the employer doesn’t repeat itself within our unions. This new report features a non-exhaustive list of examples where affiliates have taken special care to ensure all workers are able to participate fully in the work of the union.
AFT affiliates across the country have been using their collective power to encourage state legislators to pass laws that would improve their working conditions and quality of life. While some of the legislative accomplishments are focused on adjunct faculty, other wins tackle improvements in higher education and student debt, which affect the collective prosperity of the entire academic community and broader economy.
As educators confront AI’s effects on higher ed, the AFT is here to help. The “Key Principles for Using Artificial Intelligence” is a resource for those seeking to capitalize on the benefits of AI, thwart the problems it can cause, and—through their unions and campus governance bodies—have a strong and vital voice in crafting policy, protecting student and worker privacy, safeguarding intellectual property and ensuring accessibility for all.
