Comments for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will listen to pundits, pollsters and profiteers who are trying to change her image or make money off of kids' education. But she locked out parents, students and educators who went to the Department of Education on Feb. 8 to tell her a thing or two about the needs of our public schools students and educators. We had report cards and comments from more than 80,000 people to deliver but weren't let in. "This is a remarkable moment," AFT President Randi Weingarten says. "They knew we were coming in with report cards and that we asked for an appointment with Betsy DeVos. This is the first time that I have ever been to this building and we were not let in."

Since we couldn't deliver the comments to DeVos, here is some of what she would have read if she had let us in.

ONE GREAT THING DEVOS WOULD HAVE SEEN AT MY SCHOOL:
The organic interactions among a diverse population of students and teachers within academics and wide-ranging extracurriculars.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
Teachers need to be supported and valued by policy, and students need to be able to be freely who they are within the school environment, whatever their identity.`

ONE GREAT THING DEVOS WOULD HAVE SEEN AT MY SCHOOL:
Hard working students and dedicated faculty. The faculty in my school understand the importance of public higher education. The importance of providing access for students across all socio-economic classification, the importance of keeping corporate money out of institutions of higher learning to preserve and protect unbiased scientific discovery and advances. All of this occurs on our campus but every year legislators who follow the same ideals as DeVos make this tougher and tougher to achieve.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
Public higher education needs more funding and faculty, students and staff need more support. Students should not be saddled with debt that leads to forcing them into corporate backed careers rather than pursuing their passions. If students could pursue their passions rather than being forced to worry about their paychecks, they could create a better world for all.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
All students need a reasonable way to obtain a high school diploma. Teaching to the test is not working. We must support different learners. Standardized tests do not show what kids learned or teachers taught. We need to trust teachers to access a child's strengths and weaknesses. More play based learning must be brought back to our youngest learners. Project based learning and vocational skills as well as life skills must be returned to priority in our middle and high school. We must stop rating and ranking our teachers with flawed standardized tests. We need to make school and learning fun again. Let teachers teach so kids can learn. Special learners and new English learners must be supported not left behind and punished by test scores. We must stop the college ready crap. Kids need the foundations in English and Math, Science and Social Studies. Enough of the CC/Next Gen standards. And stop all the tech, screen based learning and data collection. This is not how kids learn best. Profiting from kids is disgusting. Get the billionaires and politicians out of education.

ONE GREAT THING DEVOS WOULD HAVE SEEN AT MY SCHOOL:
Student and teachers working collaboratively instead of competitively.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
Teachers need a raise. We lose teachers each year because they can't afford to stay in the profession. Testing must be curbed and the millions we spend on it redirected to fund our classrooms.

If you had visited my school, you would've seen students who were supported and challenged to think critically and engage in respectful academic discourse.

My school needs an adequate system of wrap-around services to provide students with adequate dental care, health care, social-emotional/mental health support. Creating equity among schools will improve student academic outcomes.

Our high school provides student centered learning environment with highly qualified caring teachers. Our students graduate and go on to do great things in our community . Our congressman, state senator, state assemblymen, multiple local judges and lawyers, teachers, scientists and small business oners all graduated for HHS!
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
our special needs student must not have their rights usurped by deregulation. We need to change our work environment from teaching in 90 plus degree classrooms in spring and summer. We need to expand career training through BOCES and create a fair student loan system .. DeVos could start by simply supporting public schools

ONE GREAT THING DEVOS WOULD HAVE SEEN AT MY SCHOOL:
Had Betsy Devos visited my school, she would have seen inner-city kids working their butts off to learn the skills to make their lives better; working three times as hard just to catch up and compete with the privileged and affluent, despite innumerable hurdles in their paths.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
The first thing that is needed in my school is a sense of safety so that students are not afraid of being deported, shot by the police, or beaten for using their gender identity bathroom. We need the Secretary of Education to protect all students and not to roll back all of the protections that have been put in place previously. We need our school budgets not to be devastated by funding sent to charter schools which are doing no better and often worse. We need equal funding with the entitled and affluent. We need our schools to be desegregated. We need infrastructure repairs. We need books, we need supplies, we need more teachers, more guidance counselors, and more trauma specialists. We need education that is fact based and protect the separation of church and state. We need illumination of merit pay and a teacher a valuations based on fallacious testing, which also devastator budgets .

A culture of acceptance and tolerance geared to educating the whole child and creating engaged citizens.

There has been no evidence that you are an advocate for public education. You have dismantled protections for student civil rights.

Ms. Devos understands private school. But she is clueless about how public schools actually run and the needs of that community including disabled children and those in poverty and the homeless.

MY school, Boone High School in Orlando, is AMAZING! They have 3 wonderful Magnet programs: Law, Finance, and Criminal Justice, where the students learn real world skills as well as take Honors & AP classes. Many of these kids enter college with 1-2 years already completed and are more knowledgeable than their contemporaries.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
No consideration for students and their futures. She's not fluent in pedagogy so doesn't have the first clue about teachers. Student loan forgiveness has declined, DACA is being destroyed and college sexual abuse no longer has a voice because she doesn't care. She's screwing up education and doesn't care. She also just doesn't do her job.

ONE GREAT THING DEVOS WOULD HAVE SEEN AT MY SCHOOL:
Schools in the U.S., public or private, generally do a bad job. That's not entirely the fault of teachers but of administrators and state curricula that emphasize mythology and patriotism over history and self-empowerment. We have lagged behind the rest of the world in our student "products" during all my 68 years, yet militarism (Phys ed), authoritarianism and mythology continue to be what is taught, meaning that those who cannot afford college remain good little robots who do what their bosses or other authority figures tell them to do, without question. DeVos is not that much worse than her predecessors, none of whom were worth a damn.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
The whole system needs to be redesigned to meet the need of students, not the needs of private enterprise.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
We need an informed secretary who even has an interest in our public schools. For those who have served in this position in the past, their heart-felt interest in our public school system helped them to make necessary changes to support our students and educators. 25 years as a public school teacher. I worked hard to teach the curriculum for my grade level. I made an effort to connect with my most difficult students.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
Many of my students (97% free and reduced lunch) had needs outside of the classroom that impacted their ability to learn. We needed more and better support for those students.
