WASHINGTON—AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after Jackie Goldberg overwhelmingly won in a special election to fill an open seat on the Los Angeles Unified School District’s school board:

“Jackie Goldberg’s victory is a huge win for every single person who understands the importance of public education. We have truly witnessed a paradigm shift in Los Angeles that took students, families and communities coming together for the future of our children.

“As an educator and activist for decades, Jackie understands and has seen firsthand the generational effects of disinvestment in our public schools. And as a politician, she knows the billionaire boys’ playbook of starving schools to create a crisis, then handing over control to those who want to run schools like a business rather than invest in what our kids actually need.

“Jackie will work hard every day to rebalance the city’s school system so every LAUSD school is a place where students want to learn, parents want to send their children, and teachers want to teach.”
