Jeb Bush

Jeb Bush
Governor of Florida, 1999 to 2008; University of Texas, BA, 1974.

The issues

On Education:
As governor, signed legislation to evaluate students and teachers based on high-stakes tests, create for-profit charter and virtual schools, and provide vouchers for private and religious schools. Launched the nation’s first statewide voucher program. Proposed statewide increases in class size. Would relax accountability measures for charter schools.

On Colleges and Universities:
Ended affirmative action in Florida’s colleges and universities, leading to a sharp drop in minority higher education enrollment. Put sharp limits on state funding for public colleges and universities, and instead directed Florida’s public colleges and universities to raise the cost of tuition. Supports the expansion of for-profit colleges, and would limit federal oversight of their business practices.

On Health Insurance:
Does not support the Affordable Care Act and calls it “flawed to the core.” Would repeal the parts of the ACA that keep down the costs of prescription drugs. Introduced a pilot program as governor to privatize Medicaid in Florida.

On Healthcare:
Served for eight years on the board of directors of for-profit hospital corporation Tenet Healthcare. Now serves on the board of directors of Jackson Healthcare, one of the nation’s largest for-profit healthcare staffing corporations.

On Jobs and the Economy:
Attacked tenure protections, and excluded unions from debates over education policy. Has voiced opposition to minimum wage increases. Wants to weaken collective bargaining rights for teachers and other public employees, and supports laws that undermine the strength of public and private sector unions.

On Retirement Security:
Advocates for privatization of Social Security and raising the retirement age for Social Security. Supports turning Medicare into a voucher program.

On Human Rights:
Opposes the Obama administration’s executive order protecting undocumented children. Supports the DREAM Act. Would not offer a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
