AFT Resolution

Defending Democracy and Workers’ Rights amid Federal Overreach

WHEREAS, recent deployments of federal forces into American cities under the guise of maintaining order mark a dangerous expansion of centralized power and suppression of local autonomy; and

WHEREAS, these actions reflect a pattern of diminished democratic accountability, militarization of civil spaces and erosion of constitutional norms; and

WHEREAS, the ongoing government shutdown further destabilizes public institutions, weakens worker protections and disproportionately harms vulnerable communities, including union members; and

WHEREAS, this administration—including the president, vice president, senior staff and agency officials—has repeatedly used inflammatory rhetoric and social media posts to attack Democratic leaders, nonprofit organizations and entire communities, spreading falsehoods and demeaning language such as “radical left,” “antifa” and “migrants”; and

WHEREAS, the president’s posts—including the Sept. 6 “Chipocalypse” meme threatening war on Chicago and the Sept. 27 directive to use “Full Force” in Portland—exemplify a pattern of divisive and dangerous behavior that endangers public safety and encourages hostility toward our neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the deployment of unidentified agents near schools, hospitals and places of worship—detaining community members without cause—has traumatized families and children, creating fear and lasting harm across our communities; and

WHEREAS, the president has abused the power of the office to suppress free speech and punish disfavored groups through executive orders, directives and public intimidation, including threatening prosecution of political rivals and efforts to silence journalists, activists, universities and advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion; and

WHEREAS, these developments represent a broader pattern of consolidating executive power and undermining democratic norms—hallmarks of autocratic rule:

RESOLVED, that the AFT stands in firm opposition to the occupation of cities and communities by federal forces and to any actions that threaten democratic institutions, civil liberties, safe public schools and the rights of working families; and

RESOLVED, that we recognize this moment as a critical juncture demanding organized, nonviolent resistance, solidarity across sectors and renewed commitment to democracy; and

RESOLVED, that we call on our members to join peaceful “No Kings” demonstrations on Oct. 18 to affirm a future rooted in justice, equity and collective power—where no individual or institution stands above the people.
