Career and technical education works best when classroom and industry connect. The Advanced Technology Framework—a partnership among the AFT, the United Federation of Teachers, Micron, and New York school districts—has done that for two years across a dozen schools.

No single institution could have built this alone: The AFT and UFT brought educators; Micron brought industry equipment and requirements; NY CREATES opened its semiconductor lab to high schoolers; and local colleges and districts made it fit real schedules. The result: Students are visiting labs, using the equipment, and choosing careers in advanced manufacturing.

James Cuyler, an educator at Charles W. Baker High School in the Baldwinsville Central School District in upstate New York, developed a summer pre-apprenticeship trades program.
