AFT Gives Back!

We care. We fight. We show up.

Here are four AFT Gives Back opportunities:

  • Volunteer in Pittsburgh at a Summer Dreamers Camp
  • Bring new baby items to donate in Pittsburgh
  • Donate to send books and school supplies to the U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Donate to bring water filters to Puerto Rico

Volunteer at the Summer Dreamers Camp.

Since 2010, hundreds of delegates have started their convention experience by volunteering at an AFT-organized community event or providing a donation as a way to give back to our host community.

This year in Pittsburgh is sure to be our best event yet—join us!

Thursday, July 12, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Start your convention experience off right by volunteering on July 12, National Summer Learning Day, at the Summer Dreamers Camp celebration. Join campers in reading circles; help build book nooks with themes such as social justice, diversity, health and wellness, and career and job readiness;  write fun book reviews to encourage a love of reading; and participate in other hands-on activities to support summer learning.

Sign up to volunteer here:

Two-hour shifts begin at 9 a.m.; you may sign up for more than one shift. Transportation will be provided between the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and the Dreamers Camps.

Coming to Pittsburgh? Fill your carry-on bag to its brim!

Help Pittsburgh parents give their babies a healthy start by bringing any new items (diapers, onesies, wet wipes, bottles, burp cloths, etc.) with you to the convention to donate to new local families in need.

Fill the boat with books and school supplies for students, teachers and school staff!

The U.S. Virgin Islands continue to rebuild and restock their schools after the devastation wrought by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Support their efforts through the AFT/First Book Essentials for Kids Fund to help provide books, school supplies and basic-needs items to students, teachers and school staff of the St. Croix and the St. Thomas-St. John Federation of Teachers. The Seafarers International Union and Crowley Maritime Corp. are providing free shipping and handling. Donate here:

Donate to Operation Agua and help provide water filters to Puerto Rico.

Thousands of our fellow Americans still struggle to access safe and reliable drinking water. We have already distributed thousands of filters through generous donations from AFT members, students and concerned citizens just like you. The need remains: Help us reach our goal of 100,000 filters! Donate online now at or in person at the host local table at the convention center.
