The Research and Strategic Initiatives Department supports AFT members and staff by ensuring that the most up-to-date research, information and quality analysis are available to assist AFT members and staff to effectively meet the AFT’s goals. Our mission is to provide local, state and national AFT leaders with valuable reinforcements around the issues of building union capacity, collective bargaining, fiscal analysis, employee benefits and state legislative research.
Interns will assist with corporate and industry analysis, economic development research and the development of campaigns designed to improve the lives of workers in the education and health care sectors. Interns will investigate, organize and analyze data relevant to organizing drives and assist with written reports.
This position is available immediately and preference will be given to those able to work on a full-time basis.
Interns in the AFT Research and Strategic Initiatives Department receive hands-on experience with the wide-ranging activities of our staff that works with all AFT constituencies. Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with contract analysis, tracking state legislative issues, accessing online databases, assisting with publications and responding to daily data requests.
Candidates should have a commitment to labor/social justice organizing; good writing and communication skills and an ability to learn quickly, work well on a team, and handle multiple projects and tight deadlines. Work or volunteer experience with progressive/activist organizations is helpful. Familiarity with Westlaw and other online databases, Excel and related applications is required.
