Research fellowship: Vouchers

The American Federation of Teachers is seeking a current college student (or recent graduate) for a 12- month fellowship to work with the AFT to examine the impact of educational voucher and tuition tax-credit systems on student performance and district finances. Under the supervision of the AFT Research and Strategic Initiatives Department and in coordination with the student’s academic adviser, the fellow will produce studies on existing voucher frameworks in several states. The fellow will be responsible for working with AFT staff to develop a research plan, working toward the creation of specific research deliverables by the fellowship’s conclusion.

Fellowship terms:

  • The fellowship and course of study must be approved by the student’s college and/or academic adviser;
  • The fellow is expected to commit 12 months to the fellowship and final project;
  • At least 15 hours each week during the academic year and 25-35 hours per week during the summer will be spent at AFT headquarters in Washington D.C.
  • Compensation shall be $20 per hour of work at AFT, plus travel and expenses, as necessary.

The AFT, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, was founded in 1916 and today represents 1.6 million members in more than 3,000 local affiliates nationwide. Five divisions within the AFT represent the broad spectrum of the AFT's membership: pre-K through 12th-grade teachers; paraprofessionals and other school-related personnel; higher education faculty and professional staff; federal, state and local government employees; and nurses and other healthcare professionals. In addition, the AFT represents approximately 80,000 early childhood educators and nearly 250,000 retiree members.

The AFT is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, résumé, and writing sample to the director of Human Resources, adminjobs@aft.org.
