WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on Senate Republicans changing the rules of the chamber to advance the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch:

“Today is a sad day for our democracy and for the future and integrity of the Senate. Now more than ever, we need an independent voice on the Supreme Court, not a rubber stamp for President Trump and further politicization of our judiciary.

“Neil Gorsuch is a known ideologue who stands with corporations and special interests over working people, consumers and students. His extreme record and his evasive responses during his confirmation hearing prevented him from getting the votes needed to confirm a Supreme Court justice.

“If a nominee cannot meet the 60-vote threshold, the Senate shouldn’t change the rules, the president should change the nominee.”
