JUNEAU, Alaska—Alaska Public Employees Association President Sandy Thompson Wallace, Alaska Nurses Association President Shannon Davenport and AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement after the Trump Justice Department said it would sue to block certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race results if the Republican candidate loses. APEA and AaNA are affiliated nationally with the 1.875 million-member AFT.
“This desperate and shameful political attack is yet another attempt to steal the election and overturn the will of the American people. The federal government has no role in administering elections—and this issue was resolved by the Alaska Supreme Court months ago. Now, on the eve of an election, when the Trump administration realizes its preferred candidate may lose, it tries to muzzle Alaskan voters’ voices.
“In America, voters choose their leaders, but that hasn’t stopped the president and his political henchmen from trying to choose their own voters. Alaskans will not be intimidated by this behavior and will respond at the ballot box during early voting and on Election Day.”
