CARE-FULL: Professional Learning on Trauma-Informed Practices
From union-sponsored conferences and professional learning events to Share My Lesson webinars and virtual cohorts, the AFT has coordinated trauma-informed professional learning for more than 10 years, for about 10,000 educators, and for over 200 union affiliates and school communities in 44 states and territories.
On course evaluations, participants said: “AWESOME ∙ excellent ∙ great ∙ kudos ∙ SO GOOD ∙ Thank You ∙ amazing ∙ beneficial ∙ enlightening ∙ fantastic ∙ highly recommend ∙ incredible ∙ Well Done ∙ insightful ∙ very informative ∙ wonderful.”
Join the union to strengthen 25 trauma-informed skills in the latest version of the course, “CARE-FULL: Skills for School Staff to Promote Resilience and Prevent Trauma.” Whether or not you’ve pursued continuing education on trauma before, CARE-FULL has something for everyone.
- Course content is designed for the full education workforce: teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, social workers, psychologists … and more!
- We cover basics—such as toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences. Grounded in the latest science, we also challenge assumptions and common knowledge and explore less frequently discussed concepts, such as interrupting shame, integrating play and collaborating with students on loving political action.
CARE-FULL is organized around 25 trauma-informed skills. Download the course overview to see the list of skills and how they are grouped. One workshop full of practical activities is dedicated to each skill. AFT union leaders can request any combination of workshops for up to a graduate semester’s worth of content.
Each chapter in the companion CARE-FULL textbook provides a brief, provocative, up-to-date literature review for skills covered in the workshops. Union professional learning participants receive the book. Access the textbook as a standalone resource to support your goals for trauma-informed education.
The AFT prepares new facilitators to deliver CARE-FULL with attention to psychological safety. Eligible candidates participate in the full course, complete a project to apply what they’ve learned and attend training on delivery skills, such as at the AFT Summer Educator Academy.
