AFT Vice President

Kenya Campbell serves as president of AFT Maryland, a federation of labor unions representing more than 18,000 public and private employees working across the state of Maryland in fields including nursing, education, public health, corrections, and state and local government.

She has been involved in the labor movement since being at her mother’s side as a young child. During her career she has served as secretary-treasurer and K-12 vice president of AFT Maryland. She has also held multiple offices on the executive board of the Baltimore Teachers Union, including executive vice president. She currently serves on the boards of the Metropolitan Baltimore AFL-CIO as its first vice president and the Maryland State & DC AFL-CIO as an affiliate vice president.

Prior to her work with the union, Campbell worked as an elementary teacher, mentor and educational associate with the Baltimore City Schools for more than 25 years; the bulk of her education career was spent working with children with special needs and providing professional development to novice teachers. While serving as a bargaining team member, she helped negotiate, lead and develop Baltimore City Schools’ groundbreaking Career Pathways Initiative for Teachers.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University and two master’s degrees, one from the University of Baltimore and the other from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. 

She is an active life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and participates in several other labor and community organizations.
