The issues

On Education:
Presided over a $2.3 billion cut to Florida education as speaker of the Florida House, and supports turning federal education dollars into vouchers that can be used to fund private schools. Opposed using federal stimulus dollars to fund public schools, and voted against a bill that would fund $1 billion in public school infrastructure improvements. A self-described advocate for school choice, in 2013 introduced legislation to give tax credits to allow students to attend private schools. In the state Legislature, voted for changes to the postsecondary education system that included more standardized tests. 1

On Colleges and Universities:
Voted to cut Pell Grants, which help low-income students attend college. Opposed legislation that would keep interest rates low on the federal college loans received by needy students. Supports shifting more federal funds toward online and for-profit colleges, and away from traditional colleges and universities.

On Health Insurance:
Opposed the Affordable Care Act and has advocated for its repeal.

On Jobs and the Economy:
Opposes increasing the minimum wage, and doesn’t think that minimum wage laws work. As speaker of the Florida House, sponsored a bill attacking union rights.

On Retirement Security:
Supports raising the retirement age for Social Security and reducing benefits for some seniors.

On Human Rights:
Opposes the Obama administration’s executive order protecting undocumented children (DACA and DAPA).
