PSLF Test
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program has changed lives—lifting the burden of student debt for educators, healthcare professionals, public servants and countless others who have dedicated their careers to serving our communities. But now, PSLF and income-driven repayment plans are under attack—from executive orders tied to Project 2025, politically motivated lawsuits and attempts to dismantle the Department of Education. These threats are creating uncertainty for millions of borrowers like you.
The AFT knows how important accurate information is to make the best decision on how to manage your student loan repayment, and we’re working to update our student debt clinic curriculum to ensure that you have the necessary information to make decisions that both put you in the best position for loan forgiveness and protect the financial health of your family.
Here are the things you can do right now to take action on your student loan debt.
Download your federal student loan data and payment history: Having an accurate record of your student loan history will be essential in holding loan servicers and the Department of Education accountable.
- Log in to studentaid.gov, go to your Federal Student Aid Dashboard, click on the “View Details” button in the “My Aid” section, then click the “Download My Aid Data” button to download the .txt file.
- If you are currently enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, scroll down to the “IDR End of Payment Term” box and click the “View IDR Progress” link. On the “Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plan End of Payment Term” page, click the “Payment History” link and take screenshots of your payment history.
As always, you can contact us at debtclinic@aft.org with any questions you might have about student debt.
