Building the Community Workers Deserve

Climate Justice banner 2026

We are facing a crisis! The earth is getting hotter and so are workplaces. The air in our schools, hospitals and public buildings is making us sick. And climate induced extreme weather events are causing damage and destruction to homes and public infrastructure not designed for such extremes. All of this is driven by climate change which is a direct result of our reliance on fossil fuels.

AFT members are on the frontlines demanding action on climate change — as teachers, nurses, and public service workers in the buildings and communities facing the greatest impact. We are taking the lead in our communities to advocate for investment in healthier buildings, enactment of health and safety standards that protect workers and communities, a just transition to renewable energy that creates millions of new jobs, and a re-envisioning of our public buildings as hubs of community resilience and green innovation. We continue to fight for the freedom to research and teach about climate change and its effects.
