AFT Resolution

PROFESSIONAL SALARY SCHEDULE

WHEREAS, teachers' salaries continue to be far below any reasonable level for professional work; and

WHEREAS, living costs for Americans continue to rise; and

WHEREAS, the teaching profession must compete with other professions in the employment of well-qualified college graduates; and

WHEREAS, well-educated young teachers are being attracted to private employment and service with other agencies of government, because of the low salaries offered by the public school systems of this country:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers advocate a teacher's salary schedule with a minimum salary of $10,000 and a maximum salary of at least $25,000 after 5 years of service.  (Executive Council)
