AFT Resolution

GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS

WHEREAS, our society is committed to a public school system which affords an opportunity for equal education to all students; and

WHEREAS, we support federal and state government programs to provide needed extensive compensatov education aid for pupils who are socially or economically disadvantaged; and

WHEREAS, we support the mandate that schools provide special education for students who are physically, emotionally, or mentally handicapped, and support bilingual programs where needed; and

WHEREAS, students identified as gifted and talented are often ignored insofar as federal and state funding are concerned; and

WHEREAS, such gifted and talented students also have special needs:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support education programs which will allow children identified as gifted and talented to develop their abilities to the fullest extent possible.
