Statement by AFT President Weingarten on U.S. Education Department Regulations Affecting For-Profit Colleges

The 13 regulations on program integrity released today will affect how colleges recruit and advertise to potential students, and ensure that only eligible students or programs receive financial aid.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Education’s new regulations that apply to all postsecondary institutions will help crack down on misleading, fraudulent and abusive recruitment and advertising practices that have been imposed on some college students, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

The regulations will help ensure that our most at-risk college students are on a trajectory that will equip them for success in the job market and that will not leave them with excessive debt they cannot repay.

For the past two decades, the AFT has worked to prevent fraudulent practices in higher education. Earlier this month, the AFT passed a resolution that calls for strengthening accountability at for-profit higher education institutions. We will continue to push for greater transparency and regulation of these colleges and universities, as well as legislation that safeguards students’ education and financial obligations. We also encourage the administration to issue strong regulations that ensure students who succeed in college programs have future gainful employment opportunities.
