American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on the Senate confirmation of Thomas Perez to head the U.S. Department of Labor.

"The Senate's long-overdue confirmation of Thomas Perez as the next secretary of labor will give hardworking American families a strong and dedicated advocate in the U.S. Department of Labor. Perez has dedicated his career to confronting discrimination and exploitation wherever he encounters it. As the son of immigrant parents, he will speak out forcefully for equality for all working Americans, not just some. The confirmation of his appointment comes at a time when the basic rights of American workers—from the right to fair and equal treatment in the workplace to the right to safe working conditions—are under attack. We look forward to working with a labor secretary who understands and embraces the department's mission to ensure fair and safe workplaces for America's working men and women."
