Schools and Students Can’t Rely on Bake Sales

Educators across the country are launching bake sales at schools and other locations tomorrow to let Congress know that kids and schools can't rely on small-scale fundraising to keep teachers in the classroom and end drastic budget cuts. The American Federation of Teachers and its affiliates are sponsoring the bake sales to make their point that our children and communities need the president's jobs plan.

Laying off teachers, educating kids in converted closets, and cutting art, music and prekindergarten is no way to give every child a great education. It will take more than selling cupcakes and cookies to offset the drastic budget cuts that have led to teacher layoffs, long-delayed school renovation projects, and cuts in courses and programs. President Obama's jobs plan must be passed to provide immediate funds to repair and modernize 35,000 school buildings; hire or rehire teachers, early childhood educators, counselors, paraprofessionals, literacy coaches and tutors; and save academic programs that our students need.

The Bake Sale for America's Future will launch Oct. 14. In addition to a bake sale at the AFT's headquarters in Washington, D.C.—with proceeds going to the national union's adopted school, the Walker-Jones Education Campus—bake sales will be held in schools from coast to coast, including in Norfolk, Va.; Orange County, Fla.; Anchorage, Alaska; Birmingham, Ala.; and Portland, Ore.
