New York—
Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on comments made by Bill de Blasio's wife Chirlane McCray on Christine Quinn and children and family issues in the New York Times.

"I'm an avid Bill Thompson supporter because I believe he has the right experience and vision to lead our city. But as someone who has spent my entire career working on behalf of children, I couldn't help but be terribly offended by the comments Bill de Blasio's wife made about Christine Quinn and children.

"The argument that if you don't have children you can't care for or relate to children is patently false. Chirlane McCray should know better than to perpetuate this ugly stereotype of lesbians—or for that matter any woman without children.

"No one would ever question my support for children just because I have none of my own. For lesbians of my generation having kids was never even an option--which makes McCray's comments especially unfair and hurtful.

"McCray should know better. She should apologize for her unwise and unwarranted criticism of Quinn."
