Illinois Federation of Teachers President Is Named an AFT Vice President

WASHINGTON—Dan Montgomery, president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, was elected today as a vice president of the American Federation of Teachers, the IFT’s national union.

Montgomery will be one of 43 vice presidents who serve on the AFT executive council, which shapes AFT policy.

Montgomery has been IFT president since October 2010. Previously, he served as president of the North Suburban Teachers Union in Skokie, Ill., and as a vice president on the IFT executive board. He taught at Niles North High School in Skokie for 17 years.

Montgomery replaces former IFT President Ed Geppert Jr. on the AFT executive council.

The AFT represents 1.7 million pre-K through 12th-grade teachers; paraprofessionals and other school-related personnel; higher education faculty and professional staff; federal, state and local government employees; nurses and healthcare workers; and early childhood educators.
