DETROIT—The American Federation of Teachers 2012 convention continues today, July 29, at Cobo Center in Detroit and features speeches from Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden.

Additionally, the AFT will honor U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.) with a Lifetime AFT Membership Card, an award reserved exclusively for the AFT's true champions, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to public service, first as a teacher and then as an elected representative.

AFT president Randi Weingarten will discuss the Reconnecting McDowell partnership, a unique example of solution-driven unionism that engages more than 40 groups and companies to enhance educational opportunity for children in the McDowell County, W.Va., public schools, while addressing the underlying problems caused by severe and chronic poverty and economic decline. Reconnecting McDowell is a comprehensive, long-term effort to make educational improvement in McDowell County the route to a brighter economic future. Partners from business, foundations, government, nonprofit agencies and labor have committed to seeking solutions to McDowell's complex problems—poverty, underperforming schools, drug and alcohol abuse, housing shortages, limited medical services, and inadequate access to technology and transportation. Each partner has agreed to provide services, money, products and/or expertise to lift McDowell County's schools, students and their families.
