WASHINGTON—Statement of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the nomination of Antonio Weiss as Treasury undersecretary:

“We need our top economic policy officials to be focused on shared prosperity and a fair economy for all, not just the wealthy few. That’s why we oppose the nomination of Antonio Weiss. As a longtime adviser on mergers and acquisitions for an investment bank, Weiss does not have the necessary experience to stand up for consumers or responsibly manage public finances.

“Last summer, Weiss worked on one of the most high-profile corporate inversions, whereby Burger King slashed its tax bill by purchasing the Canadian company Tim Hortons and ‘inverting’ the American company to Canadian ownership. These schemes undercut school districts, community colleges and universities of the healthy tax base they need to expand educational opportunity for all our children.

“We must reclaim the promise of America through a fair economy and shared prosperity that supports our obligation to help all children succeed. That won’t be achieved by nominating Antonio Weiss to one of the most important economic and consumer protection positions at the Treasury Department.”
