WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on supporting the Iran nuclear agreement:
“As a lifelong crusader for peace, education and opportunity for all, here and abroad, and as a Jew who has been a lifelong supporter of Israel, I support the Iran nuclear deal as the best current course of action. It cannot be premised on trust; it must be supported by a strategy of verification and enforcement. This deal was built on years of tough yet essential consensus-building among stakeholders and nations, including Hillary Clinton’s global effort as secretary of state to impose tough sanctions on Iran. To walk away from this multilateral agreement would undermine our ability to work cooperatively on future threats to international security.
“I strongly believe that the best hope for a non-nuclear Iran and peace in the region for future generations begins with this agreement. I understand and respect those who have different opinions, particularly in light of the current Israeli government’s opposition, but one can support Israel and fiercely believe in its security without supporting all of its government’s policies. The Iran nuclear agreement will make Israel safer and will be good for world peace. Once approved, it will allow us to refocus on the many priorities here on American soil that desperately need our full attention, such as the overhaul of No Child Left Behind and the federal budget.”
