WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement in response to Senate Democrats’ $1 trillion infrastructure plan:

“Senate Democrats demonstrated their commitment to working families today by unveiling an infrastructure plan that will put millions of Americans to work, grow our economy and address our critical infrastructure needs. If President Trump is serious about creating jobs and helping working people—the people he claims to speak for—then he should work with Congress to immediately pass this proposal.

“This infrastructure blueprint not only focuses on rebuilding our aging roads and bridges, it would modernize schools and healthcare facilities, revolutionize our transportation systems and expand access to broadband. And it includes important provisions for working people through “Buy America” requirements, prevailing wage standards, participation from minority- and women-owned businesses, and the enforcement of environmental protections. Senate Democrats showed the country how to turn aspiration into action.

“The AFT has been walking the walk on infrastructure investments for years, harnessing the billions in our members’ pension funds to serve the common good. In 2011, the American labor movement committed $10 billion over five years for infrastructure. Now, $16 billion has been allocated, creating at least 100,000 jobs. We will continue to support programs that create an economy that works for all, not just the wealthy few.”
