WASHINGTON—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on the introduction of the Employee Empowerment Act:

"Workers' rights are as fundamental as civil rights and human rights. This bill protects all rights equally, offering the same legal protections to workers trying to organize as those fighting for their civil and human rights.

"With anti-union attacks coming from all directions—in the media, Congress, the Supreme Court and statehouses across the nation as well as in the workplace—now is the time to stand with teachers, nurses and other public service providers to ensure they have the tools they need to fight for safe working conditions, competitive wages and benefits, respect and dignity on the job, and the ability to advocate for those they serve.

"We would like to thank Reps. Keith Ellison and John Lewis for their continued support of workers' rights and for taking the lead in introducing this important legislation."
