AFT Urges Mexican Government to End Violence Against Teachers

For Release:

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

WASHINGTON—Statement by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten urging Mexican government to end violence against teachers:

“The Mexican government’s violent response to Mexican teachers’ protests in Oaxaca, Mexico, is reprehensible, tragic, and a violation of free speech rights and the rule of law. Differences of opinion should never, ever lead a government to use any kind of force—much less lethal force that has taken at least eight lives and resulted in other casualties. We call for an immediate cessation of violence and the start of serious, productive talks at the highest levels of all parties involved in the dispute.

“It is a sad commentary on human rights when a government meets union concerns with deadly force. Dialogue, not force; collaboration, not isolation, are the means to a resolution.”
