AFT Statement On Merger of BlueGreen Alliance with Apollo Alliance

For Release:

Thursday, May 26, 2011

George Jackson

The AFT joined the BlueGreen Alliance, a coalition of labor unions and clean energy organizations, in 2009. Today’s merger combines the widespread grass-roots activism of the BlueGreen Alliance with the strong national and state policy focus of the Apollo Alliance.

WASHINGTON—As a proud member of the BlueGreen Alliance, we welcome our new partner and look forward to working together to improve the environment, and to create more good green jobs and a stronger economy.

We stand with the new unified organization in support of the Strengthening Manufacturing and Rebuilding Transit (SMART) Act, sponsored by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). Millions of Americans are out of work, fuel prices are at all-time highs, and our nation must compete in a global economy. To leave a better world for today’s children and for generations to come, we need to reinvest in mass transit systems that will put Americans back to work, conserve natural resources and make our nation a model of efficiency. We will work with the merged organization and with Sen. Brown to urge congressional passage of the SMART Act.
