WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the Nomination of John King for Education Secretary:

"When the President first proposed John King as Arne Duncan's replacement, we were critical because his tenure as New York state education commissioner was marked by fixating on high-stakes testing and dismissing the concerns of educators and parents. Since King became acting Education Secretary, we have seen both an understanding  of the harmful effects of overtesting, and a willingness to promote both the reset of federal education policy and the collaboration with educators and parents that are at the heart of the new federal education law. So regardless of whether King is acting or appointed secretary, we will do whatever it takes to ensure that federal education policies are implemented in ways that preserve  public education, that promote equity and excellence for the students we serve from pre-K through college, and that support and respect their educators and parents."
