The International Summit on the Teaching Profession couldn't be timelier for AFT President Randi Weingarten, having just returned from a study mission to top-ranked China, Singapore and Japan.
In these countries, as well as in Finland and Ontario, Canada, which she visited last year, teacher training is rigorous and demanding, the teaching profession is respected, and collaboration between teachers and school administrators is the norm. Weingarten says this stands in stark contrast to U.S. public education.
At the International Summit, which will be held at the Hilton New York on March 15, President Weingarten will discuss what is needed to prepare teachers to effectively teach 21st-century skills to their students, and how success and quality should be measured. She'll be drawing on what she has learned from her visits to schools in the United States and abroad.
If you would like to speak with President Weingarten either March 14 or March 15, contact me and I'll be glad to arrange a conversation.
