AFT Statement on the Death of Oregon Nurse in Portland Mall Shooting

AFT's Weingarten: "It is our hope that all of those she leaves behind can draw strength from the knowledge that Cindy Ann Yuille was beloved by everyone who came in contact with her in everyday life and in her special mission as a hospice nurse."

WASHINGTON—Statement of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the death of Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, in the shooting this week at a Portland, Ore., shopping mall. Yuille and another shopper were killed, and a third person seriously wounded, by a gunman who then took his own life.

"It was with profound sadness that we learned Wednesday evening that Cindy Ann Yuille, a member of the AFT affiliate Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, died in the shooting Tuesday at the Clackamas Town Center shopping mall near Portland. I join with the entire AFT family, Cindy's union brothers and sisters across the country, in expressing our sorrow at this tragic loss and in sending our support to Cindy's husband Robert, as well as to her daughter, stepson and other members of her family, her friends and her colleagues in the OFNHP, where she was a member for nearly 25 years.

"It is our hope that all of those she leaves behind can draw strength from the knowledge that Cindy was beloved by everyone who came in contact with her in everyday life and in her special mission as a hospice nurse, a calling she shared with her husband. As her family members have told us, Cindy was someone who truly was 'everybody's friend.' It is difficult to accept that someone who devoted her life to providing comfort and care to those who were dying has been taken from us in such a cruel and senseless manner.

"We grieve for Cindy and all the victims of this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones. A quick response by law enforcement and the cool-headed reaction by the thousands of shoppers in the mall combined to help prevent more bloodshed in this random and heartless violence."
