Statement by Randi Weingarten,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On the Supreme Court Ruling in New Process Steel v. NLRB

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that a decision by the National Labor Relations Board was invalid because, at the time, only two seats on the five-member board had been filled.

WASHINGTON—Today’s Supreme Court decision cheats American workers by shifting the balance of power toward employers. Employers who have mistreated workers have been given license to use their deep pockets and delaying tactics to avoid justice. The decision also rewards the despicable tactics of President George W. Bush, whose NLRB nominations were driven chiefly by the desire to undo decades of labor laws. We urge Congress to find a legislative solution so that the nation’s labor laws are enforced fairly.
