More and more teachers are aware of the new Common Core State Standards for teaching, and more and more are supporting the deep learning they promote.
According to a national poll of teachers and voters released by Achieve, a nonprofit education reform organization focused on raising academic standards, 87 percent of the teachers surveyed in May 2012 were aware of the standards, up from just 68 percent in August 2011. Among those surveyed this May, 68 percent were favorably impressed, up from 59 percent in 2011.
"The more teachers know about the Common Core State Standards, the more supportive they are of implementing the standards," said Sandy Boyd, Achieve's senior vice president of strategic initiatives. And, she added, when more people are aware of the standards, training will be key—training such as AFT's own conferences and outreach efforts under way in local chapters across the country. While teachers are tuning in, public awareness is lagging. Less than 25 percent of the voters surveyed were aware of Common Core, though after a brief explanation 77 percent favored implementation. "Voters support the implementation of the CCSS but they too will need more information about … what it means as the standards move from being an idea to a reality in schools," said Boyd.
The survey, conducted on behalf of Achieve by Public Opinion Strategies and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, surveyed 1,000 registered voters and 500 K-12 teachers nationally.
