AFT responds to critics of Common Core stakes moratorium

AFT president Randi Weingarten is responding to Chiefs for Change, a group of state education officials who have dismissed and distorted her call for a moratorium on the consequences of new standardized tests based on the Common Core State Standards.

Chiefs for Change was organized with help from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Contrary to what the group maintains, the AFT's call for a moratorium does not mean we are pulling back on accountability but rather are trying to make accountability real. A moratorium would give teachers and districts the time they need to create and agree on implementation plans, field-test the new assessments and make necessary adjustments.
