Joshua Pechthalt was elected president of the more then 120,000-member California Federation of Teachers in March 2011, after serving as president of the United Teachers Los Angeles, AFT Local 1021, for six years. Prior to his UTLA presidency, Pechthalt served in numerous capacities, including as a union representative at his school, a member of UTLA’s House of Representatives and its board of directors, and as UTLA regional area director. He was chairman of the CFT’s Fight for California’s Future Task Force, and helped found the Southern California Public Education Coalition representing a broad spectrum of education-related unions in the Los Angeles area. He is a vice president of the California AFL-CIO. Pechthalt taught English as a second language for two years in Cali, Colombia, and social studies for 21 years at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. Pechthalt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He and his wife are the proud parents of one daughter who attends middle school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
