Higher Education: Should universities accept corporate funding for research?

If they do this, give a bunch to the American Indian colleges. If you're owrried about the needy in the next election, look at the reservations.

Universities must strictly define the conditions of corporate contributions they accept for any purpose. If a university doesn't have explicit language to maintain control of research and its outcome, it's certain that any corporation will apply its own, along with some possible/probable objectives for the research that may greatly counter a university's mission and values. History shows that corporations put profit before anything.
