AFT members across the United States are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and massive destruction caused by the Oct. 8 earthquake that struck in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, says AFT president Edward J. McElroy.
In Northern Pakistan and India, tens of thousands have lost their lives and many more are injured, missing, orphaned or separated from their families. Once again, this region faces the enormous task of rebuilding communities left without food, clean water, shelter, schools, healthcare, power or transportation.
Education International (EI) reports that the All Pakistan Government School Teachers Association has received reports that at least 14 schools have been destroyed and more than 100 teachers and 3,500 students killed. EI has issued an urgent appeal for help and financial support.
In a statement McElroy said the AFT "conveys its heartfelt sympathy to the victims of this disaster. We also express our gratitude and respect for aid workers providing humanitarian assistance, and we commend those who already have begun to donate funds or volunteer time to help."
AFT's leaders, local affiliates and members, together with the union's partners in Education International, Public Services International and the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center, pledge to work with educators and other workers around the globe to bolster relief efforts for the victims of this tragedy, said McElroy.
Donations to assist teachers and their families affected by the earthquake may be sent to Education International at the following address:
