"Before Their Time: The World of Child Labor," by David L. Parker, tells the stories of children working in various hazardous occupations with compelling pictures and descriptions of the conditions in which they labor. Published 2007 by Quantuck Lane Press. "In Some Places, Child Abuse Is Business as Usual" is an 18" x 24" poster, featuring a photo by David L. Parker. Contact information above.  Free for AFT members, $2.50 for nonmembers. 

"Ending Child Labor Through Education—What Teachers and Unions Can Do" is a poster and brochure from the AFT's Child Labor Project that describes how education is essential in the fight to end child labor and how teachers and trade unionists can help. Ideal for displaying in the classroom, this poster is free for AFT members, $1 for nonmembers. Contact information above.

"Stolen Dreams: Portraits of Working Children," by David L. "Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders Against Child Slavery," by Susan Kuklin, is a powerful story of the young boy whose life and death inspired the international community to work against child labor. The book also describes the movement that continues his struggle against child labor today. Both sobering and inspiring, it shows how we are all implicated in the global practice of child labor and how we can all work together to end it. Best for middle school students.  Available at local bookstores for $17.95, or order by phone from 888/330-8477. 

"Listen to Us: The World's Working Children," a photo essay by Jane Springer, is suitable for 9- to 12-year-olds. Through charts, maps and personal accounts, Springer, a former UNICEF worker, introduces young readers to child laborers in many countries. $16.95, 96 pages, published April 1998 by Groundwood Books. Available through online booksellers.

"The Carpet Boy's Gift," by Pegi Deitz Shea, published in 2003 by Tilbury House Publishers, is about a boy who is sold by his family to work as a child laborer in Pakistan. He learns from reformer Iqbal Masih (see above) that there are laws that have ended bonded labor for children. Eventually the boy and other child workers leave the factory to go to a new school built nearby. This book comes with educational resources that are updated every year. It is appropriate for grades 3 to 6.  Hardcover: $16.95. 

"Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy," by Kevin Bales, published in 2000 by the University of California Press. This disturbing investigation of conditions in Thailand, Mauritania, Brazil, Pakistan, India and parts of America and Europe reveals the nature of the new slavery and how it has adapted to the global economy. Bales explores how individuals and governments can combat slavery and describes successful antislavery actions by international and local organizations.  Good for high school students. $17.95.
