Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute 2010

    Print

The AFT's 12th annual Center for School Improvement Leadership Institute is being held Jan. 28-31, 2010, at the offices of our New York City affiliate, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). The AFT and UFT will conduct a four-day institute designed to support union and district partnership efforts in developing the skills necessary to raise student achievement through school and district teams.

Making positive changes in schools in need of improvement is tough work, and we know it takes a union-management partnership at the district and the school-community level to make it happen. Considering the Obama administration's focus on improving schools through the funding of School Improvement grants and Race to the Top funds, this timely institute is designed to assist local unions and school districts in meeting their shared goals. This Institute gives participants access to best practices designed to meet the challenges of the No Child Left Behind Act. It also will show you the types of labor-management partnerships for school improvement that the AFT advocates and in which many of our locals engage.

The Institute will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, and continue through noon on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the UFT, 52 Broadway. Hotel accommodations have been arranged at the Millenium Hilton, 55 Church Street, which is three blocks from the UFT (do not call the hotel directly).

The institute's work sessions will focus on the development of team skills, data-driven planning, effective communications, effective professional development practices, action planning and research-based programs to raise student achievement. Additionally, teams will have the opportunity for ongoing consultations, technical assistance and school visits to support and advance their work.
