Fenway High School
Fenway High School is a small, urban school that empowers both teachers and students. The school has pioneered successful teacher-training initiatives, such as the Boston Teacher Residency program. Modeled after medical residency programs, and funded by both private parties and government agencies, this program recruits applicants with degrees and work experience in the subjects they want to teach. They are paired with highly effective veteran teachers as mentors, while simultaneously pursuing master’s degrees in education at nearby universities. The program has kept young, new teachers in schools longer than average. Ongoing research is being conducted to assess the program’s effect on student achievement.
It is clear that Fenway has benefited from substantial community support. In the past, Digitas, a leading digital marketing agency, has invited Fenway students to participate in a summer program in which students work with Digitas professionals and compete to solve particular marketing challenges. Digitas executives then assess the projects and recognize the best solutions. Fenway students also benefit from district and state support. Students who excel on Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System exams receive full scholarships to state universities; this year 12 Fenway students received them.
Teacher accessibility also contributes to student success. Faculty and department blogs are available on the school’s website to facilitate up-to-date, convenient communication with parents and students. The school also considers student satisfaction a top priority. For instance, seniors are asked to compose in-depth assessments of their experiences at Fenway. Teachers and administrators then use such observations to improve the experiences of future students at this high-performing school.
