On nurses day, May 6, members of AFT Healthcare focused their attention on the harm that could come to millions of low-income adults and children if Congress gives final approval to a proposed $10 billion in cuts in Medicaid. AFT Healthcare has launched a national campaign, "Some Cuts Don’t Heal," to thwart the Medicaid cuts. This ad appeared in the congressional newspapers Roll Call and The Hill on Nurses Day to highlight the union’s campaign.

"Members of Congress should be voting to save lives, not to cut off access to healthcare for low-income Americans," said Candice Owley, chair of AFT Healthcare.

The congressional reconciliation bill that contains the Medicaid cuts is scheduled for an up-or-down vote before the full House and Senate in September. If the cuts receive final approval, Owley says, states and hospitals will have to make up the difference with more uncompensated charity care, which they cannot afford, and patients will go untreated.
