Each scholarship winner received a $1,000 grant to pursue studies in their field of work or in labor studies. The high school student winners were awarded four-year, $8,000 grants. From its beginning in 1993, the scholarship program--named in honor of the late AFT secretary-treasurer who served from 1963 to 1991--has expanded steadily as a source of scholarship money for graduating high school students and for AFT members seeking to advance their education.
