Twenty AFT members--including four from the federation of nurses and health professionals--and four children of AFT members received Robert G. Porter Scholar money this year.

  • Barbara Rosen, RN: member of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees FNHP affiliate at the Bergen Regional Medical Center Hospital in Paramus, New Jersey.

  • Patricia Merrick, RN: member of University Health Professions, Local 3837, at the John Dempsey Hospital/University of Connecticut Medical Center.

  • Bernadette McDowell, RN: Warwick, Rhode Island, school nurse and member of the Warwick Teachers Union, Local 0915.

  • Michelle Furlong, RN: Warwick, Rhode Island, school nurse and member of the Warwick Teachers Union.

Each scholarship winner received a $1,000 grant to pursue studies in their field of work or in labor studies. The high school student winners were awarded four-year, $8,000 grants. From its beginning in 1993, the scholarship program--named in honor of the late AFT secretary-treasurer who served from 1963 to 1991--has expanded steadily as a source of scholarship money for graduating high school students and for AFT members seeking to advance their education.
