HEROES ALL  The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is seeking nominations for its 2003 awards. The prize recognizes young people ages 8 to 18 who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Barron Prize winners each receive $2,000 to be applied to their higher education or service project. Adults may nominate young heroes for the 2003 Barron Prize until May 30. To nominate a young person for the award or for further information, visit www.barronprize.org.

SUMMER SENSE  Nearly half of all unintentional injury-related deaths among children occur during the summer months, and the National Safe Kids Campaign has responded with a series of pamphlets and checklists for students and parents. Addressed in free downloadable materials, many in both English and Spanish, are such concerns as water and motor vehicle safety. Also offered are a collection of useful links and a summer safety quiz. To view or download materials, visit the National Safe Kids Campaign online, www.safekids.org, and enter "summer safety" in the search field.

Author! Author!  The Kidpub Web site, now in its eighth year, is home to more than 42,000 stories written by and for children. Contributions may be searched by recent additions, editors' choice, author's name or story title. Visitors also can see descriptions of different schools that are incorporating Kidpub into the classroom. For students who would like to contribute to Kidpub, the cost is 58 cents a month to join the Kidpub Author's Club. There is no cost to browse submissions. Visit www.Kidpub.org.

HEAD FOR THE HILLS  Millions of Americans take the opportunity each summer to visit U.S. national parks nationwide. To make the most of this learning opportunity, the National Park Service offers a variety of online resources that highlight the history of selected parks, along with interesting facts about science and nature in the wild. NPS, through its ParkNet Web site, also features a special section for teachers. Resources are located at www.nps.gov.

CONFERENCE HELP  Mead Westvaco is offering teachers a free parent/teacher conference planner. Included in the kit, which can be downloaded at the Mead Web site, are tips for successful conferences, a fill-in form for preconference surveys, and help with some common questions and problems that arise during conferences. For details, visit www.mead4teachers.com.
