Debunking voucher myths

People for the American Way (www.pfaw.org), which has joined with the AFT and other education, community and religious groups to oppose school vouchers, has posted new, updated information about the false promise of school vouchers and tuition tax credits.

Myths and Facts About School Vouchers takes on common misconceptions about both the effectiveness and popularity of vouchers. PFAW debunks generalizations such as "African-Americans support school vouchers" or "students in voucher programs do better than their peers in public schools."

Also, two tuition tax credit programs in Arizona that were touted as a vehicle to give the poor more education choices have turned out to be "expensive and inefficient at reaching low-income students," says a study from the Education Policy Studies Lab at Arizona State University. Myths and Facts and a news release and links to the Arizona report can be accessed through the PFAW Web site at www.pfaw.org/issues/education.
