Teacher Dec. 1999/Jan. 2000--News & Trends Math Campaign Why are manhole covers round? That's one of the puzzles (pictured below) posed by "Figure This!" a new math campaign launched Dec. 1 by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education. Figure This! provides a series of mathematical challenges to be featured on radio, television, print and the Internet. The campaign focuses on middle school math, and sponsors hope that Figure This! challenges will be included in the media much like a daily crossword puzzle, horoscopes or the morning traffic report. The campaign also has a Web site that provides copies of the complete set of challenges. The sponsors hope to create partnerships with other organizations and business to help distribute the challenges in many places, such as newspapers, on the backs of cereal boxes, on scoreboards at sporting events or on placemats at fast-food restaurants. Other organizations supporting the campaign include the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Widmeyer-Baker Group and the Learning First Alliance, which includes the AFT. For details about the campaign, visit the Figure This! Web site after Dec. 1 at www.figurethis.org or call 1-877-GO-SOLVE.
